How Essiac Tea Became Part of My Breast Cancer Healing Journey

One afternoon, while walking through downtown Americus, Georgia, I wandered into a wonderful little store called Center Stage Market. It was filled with healthy foods I wasn't accustomed to seeing in one place—shiitake and maitake mushrooms, organic vegetables, kombucha, supplements, and so much more.

I had never tasted kombucha before. I wasn't quite sure what to think of it, but I decided to give it a try. To be honest, I would have much preferred a Dr Pepper! But over time, it became one of those healthier replacements that I learned to enjoy.

More important than the food, though, was meeting Debbie Sapp, a certified herbalist who worked there.

After I shared my recent breast cancer diagnosis with her, she graciously took the time to listen. She spoke about helping her brother through his cancer journey and another friend who had faced cancer as well. She encouraged them with lifestyle changes, healthier food choices, and carefully selected supplements.

Before I left the store, Debbie introduced me to Essiac tea and explained how she brewed it. Because I respected her knowledge and appreciated her kindness, I decided to make it part of my own healing journey. She explained that she believed it helped support the body's lymphatic system.

At that time, I used the traditional four-herb Essiac blend, which contains burdock root, slippery elm, sheep sorrel, and Indian rhubarb. Today, I occasionally complete a six-month "Essiac refresh" using the eight-herb formula from Genuine Essiac Tea, which includes those original four herbs along with watercress, blessed thistle, kelp, and red clover. As I write this, I'm one month into my current six-month routine. For me, it has become a periodic wellness practice.

I began with the traditional four-herb blend and now prefer the eight-herb formula for my periodic wellness routine. Both have devoted followers, and many people have strong preferences for one over the other.

If you decide to use Essiac tea, always follow the preparation and usage instructions provided by the manufacturer of the product you purchase, as different formulations may have different directions.

I also enjoy reading the testimonials shared by people on the Genuine Essiac Tea website. While every person's experience is unique, I find their stories encouraging.

Sadly, Center Stage Market has since closed its doors. I still think about that little shop from time to time. It reminds me that sometimes God places just the right person in our path at exactly the right moment. Debbie's willingness to spend a few minutes talking with a frightened woman made a lasting impression on me.

I'd love to hear from you. Do you have a favorite local health food store, farmers market, or special place where you've found both healthy foods and encouraging people? Share it in the comments. I always enjoy discovering places that make a community feel a little more like family.

Personal Note:

This post shares my personal experience with Essiac tea as part of my overall wellness routine. It is not medical advice, and I encourage you to discuss any herbal supplements with your healthcare provider, especially if you are undergoing treatment or taking prescription medications.
